Education for Sustainability
By changing fashion education, we create vital leverage in the transformation of the fashion system. We engage in transformational education practice with learners across levels and locations through courses and resources for LCF and UAL students and tutors, and for wider audiences through digital learning.
We believe that
education for sustainability is a catalyst for change in societies, cultures, and economies. We explore the why, what, how, and with whom of creative education as sustainability in action.
Education for Sustainability is one of the foundational pillars of CSF. We understand that Fashion education at university level offers an unparalleled place to experiment with new ideas, to challenge existing narratives and put ecological and equitable principles into action. It involves development towards professional practice and a sense of self in the world. Learners can realise this through a path set out in CSF’s educational framework that offers a series of ‘mindsets’ as approaches to consider fashion’s context and agendas.
Our work in education for sustainability draws on our academic research, teaching experience, and knowledge exchange practices. We cultivate conditions for the development of skills, knowledge, and capabilities needed by fashion designers, communicators, and strategists. We engage in a mutual learning process with a diverse range of participants, seeking to ensure agency in learners and to eliminate discrimination in race, gender, cultural, religious, and other terms. We seek to de-colonise and de-carbonise the curriculum, working with communities at LCF, UAL, and with other institutions.
We take a systemic approach to change the fashion education system through the development of sustainability led educational ethos, cultures, and practices, pedagogies and learning environments, course content, and criteria for assessment.
