Professor and Director, Centre for Industrial Sustainability in the Institute for Manufacturing, Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge
I am a Professor MAE, FIET, FLSW, FIEMA, FRSA, CEng and Director of Research in Industrial Sustainability at the University of Cambridge.
My work is always trans-disciplinary and focuses on solving real-world problems at the pioneering edge. We call this action research. I study the interactions between technology, people and money to find solutions that will help us to have a thriving industry that operates within planetary boundaries, and changes at the speed and scale that the planet needs. I have founded various cleantech start-ups and served as Special Advisor to the UK House of Lords. I was recently elected to serve as vice-President of Academia Europaea.
What does stewardship mean to you?
The photo shows me and others that I volunteer with, discussing ‘how to resolve tourism and sustainability in the Alps?’. It demonstrates stewardship through a concern for others (including the planet) and also through the inclusivity and positive energy that is needed to resolve such challenges. We made a film and even won an award, which also symbolises the need to bring others into the debate, and not just those of us who are heavily invested.
