Yummy - all local too

Yummy - all local too

So the third week of Sustainability Month is here and this week is Eat Local Week.

Here is what I managed to find in Waitrose. No apples, no carrots even but cheese was plentiful. Once you actually read the packaging it is surprising what you find. Lots of the ‘local’ food has a very small, tiny disclaimer stating that not all ingredients are from the UK, some might even be from outside the EU. This was especially noticable on the soups.

There was soup – all seasonal veg. Strawberries from Sussex and tomatoes from Kent, crisps from Herefordshire… but all the packaging will prove to be a struggle next week – No Rubbish Week.

CSF in Sustainability Month

June is going to be a challenging month for the Centre for Sustainable Fashion. Not ones to rest on our laurels and credentials we are setting ourselves a weekly target/challenge for the whole of June. Hopefully these challenges will become part of our daily routine too.

The week beginning June 1st will see the start of our Cycling to Work Week. We are all now kitted out with bikes, helmets and some stylish cycle friendly attire and we hope that this compulsory cycling week will help change our habits and that a Cycling to Work Week will become a Cycling to Work Month and so on. They’ll be no excuses either: meetings with important fashion folk, the weather, late nights – these won’t wash.

The week after (8th of June) will see us operating a totally paper free office. No printing, no notebooks in meetings, no post-its etc. Although we don’t print unnecessarily there’ll surely be a difference in the office.

Next challenge is Eat Local. What we mean by local has been a constant source of debate. Do we mean the whole of the UK or an 100 mile radius of London? Tell us your thoughts and we’ll let you know what we decide.

Finally, and perhaps the biggest challenge for us is No Rubbish Week. We will not generate any rubbish for a week. The logistics are being thrashed out as we speak.

We’re keen to hear your thoughts so feel free to comment and watch out for our updates.
