Tonight, Stiglitz WOW Talks will be showcasing speakers who are inspiring leaders in the world of fashion in a range of different ways from a variety of perspectives. what is the role of fashion today? What ‘should’ we the consumers and the industry consider in a world experiencing global environmental crisis? Who is responsible? Do we even want to be responsible? These are all questions which will be addressed. Tonight’s speakers include Alex McIntosh from the Centre for Sustainable Fashion, Amisha Ghadiali, Aret Kapetanovic, Clare Farrell, Mathilda Tham and Elena Corchero.

The Red Planet Dress, a dress from Helen’s personal collection and from her textile collaboration with Trish Belford (first shown as part of Helen’s London Fashion Week Science Museum tunnel catwalk show in 1995) has now been catalysed to purify air. The dress will be on show at the City Arts Centre, continuing Catalytic Clothing’s involvement in Edinburgh Science Festival.

For the first time, several bespoke denim kilts, kindly produced in Edinburgh by 21st Century Kilts, will be catalysed and ‘planted’ with denim jeans in this central Edinburgh Square, further demonstrating our ambition to catalyse everyday clothing, notably using denim jeans, of which there are more pairs in the world than there are people.
An art intervention to illustrate ideas behind the pioneering research project Catalytic Clothing, exploring and introducing the idea that everyday clothing and textiles can purify the air we breathe. They are potentially the world’s first air purifying jeans/kilts.
The jeans and kilts will be on show from noon on the 4th – dusk on the 8th April

Prof Helen Storey and Prof Tony Ryan will be in conversation with Prof John Shepherd CBE FRS, Professorial Research Fellow in Earth System Science, University of Southampton, UK for Edinburgh International Science Festival. They will discuss the story of Catalytic Clothing and the science and cultural programme and campaign behind it.
A Catalytic Clothing Red Planet Velvet Dress will be on show at the talk from Helen’s own fashion archive.

A shop in Eldon Square will be the setting for a ‘pop up gallery’ for the duration of Newcastle ScienceFest. The exhibition will include two Red Planet dresses, a mini Field of Jeans and a new film telling the Catalytic Clothing story.

To celebrate Newcastle and Durham’s Science Festival a Field of Jeans will be shown on Durham’s World Heritage Site, Palace Green*. The Field will be on show from noon on 9th until the morning of the 15th March.

Film: A new 12 minute film that chronicles the journey of Catalytic Clothing can be viewed in the near by World Heritage Centre in Owengate.

The Environmental Justice Foundation are hosting the Great Fashion Cycle, a charity bike ride from London to Paris, for the fourth year in a row. The aim of the bike ride, aside from the great experience of passing through all the incredible sites between London and Paris, is to raise awareness and essential funds for the EJF’s environmental and human rights work with a focus on the Pick Your Cotton Carefully campaign.
LCF Access Fashion Business student, Amanda Schoppe has embarked on the London to Paris challenge to help raise funds. The ride will take place this coming July 2012 and Amanda is hoping to raise £1400.

To celebrate the publication of ATLAS, a book bringing together geographers, architects, writers, artists and designers to test ways of understanding and responding to global change, there will be an event - New Maps for an Island Planet, taking place at the Southbank Centre as part of the Literature and Spoken Word programme.

There will be a discussion chaired by broadcaster Quentin Cooper where geographer Doreen Massey, architect Carolyn Steel and campaigner/writer Andrew Simms will draw on their contributions to ATLAS. Poet and playwright Lemn Sissay will also provide a reading of his poetry. After the discussion and reading, Open Book offers the chance to engage with a wider group of contributors to ATLAS in an informal gathering at cafe tables in the Queen Elizabeth Hall foyer.

Refl-act are hosting a focus group with young persons in the afternoon of the Saturday, the 3rd of March in Brixton. They are looking for students to get involved and discuss their views on sustainability and for your time you will be provided with delicious organic food and beverages. You don’t need to have a degree in sustainability or be an expert in any way, Refl-act are interested in what you think as a young person. It is promised to be a relaxed and fun afternoon and you will help shape the documentary in invaluable ways.
