Flaming hot accessories on sale this week!

January 24, 2010 by Hatty

What do you do with a material that is so tough and durable it is impossible to destroy and in no way biodegradable? Bury it as landfill? Nope – you make it into a range of sleek, desirable eco-friendly accessories, that’s what!

The brilliant Elvis and Kresse Arts has just launched its first ever range of products made from reclaimed fire-hose. Not the first item that springs to mind when you think of stylish accessories but apparently, bright red, double wall nitrile rubber is the perfect raw material for creating a collection of stunning belts, bags and clutches – just ask Cameron Diaz (said to be a huge fan of the Elvis and Kresse Arts bowling bag).

And founders James Henrit and Kresse Wesling, environmentalists from Brighton, not only create beautiful pieces made entirely from recycled rubber and textiles (including luxurious parachute silk) but also plough 50% of their profits back into the source material  – in this case, The Fire Fighter’s Charity. Clearly, these guys are sustainable business geniuses!

Launching formally at Esthetica, the eco-aware strand of London Fashion Week, pieces from the fire-hose range go on sale this week. Visit the Elvis and Kresse website now and treat yourself to a radiant reclaimed rucksack while you still can!

Sustainability – a Driver for Business Growth

by Hatty

Intended to start a dialogue between brands, retailers and their supply chains and lead to the broader interrogation of sustainability as a business strategy, Cotton Council International (CCI) held a two day seminar in Budapest at the end of last year and in doing so answered some of the key industry and consumer concerns about sustainable clothing and home textiles.

Both relevant and timely, given the economic climate and the increasing demand from consumers for cotton products which combine natural fibre benefits with sustainable production, organisers of the seminar explored definitions of sustainability and how to accomplish it and offered solutions to the challenges of implementing a sustainable business policy. In The Observer yesterday, Erin O’Connor talks about the Traid sponsored project in India, that is supporting homeworkers whose skills often go unrewarded financially and culturally. How often do we notice the skill and care that is put into crafting intricate detail on the clothes we wear?

Fairtrade Project – Designer Needed

January 17, 2010 by Hatty

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated individual, with technical footwear and design skills, to become involved in a Fairtrade project which will help to transform the lives of smallholder rubber farmers in India.  This exciting project will allow you to gain valuable insight into working with a developing supply chain that starts with farmers and will hopefully end in UK stores.

The project, to design and produce flip-flops in a Keralan factory using rubber produced by local smallholder farmers, will give you the chance to channel your design skills and creativity into something meaningful and worthwhile. By creating a contemporary, comfortable and colourful range of Fairtrade flip-flops you will bring  a unique and sustainable product to the marketplace whilst gaining invaluable experience working with the technical challenges of using rubber as a raw material.

Work to date has been financed by a charitable foundation. Your expenses will be covered and a small fee paid.  The project starts immediately and, despite being a short term, part-time assignment, there is the possibility of it leading to a placement opportunity.

If this sounds like an experience you can’t afford to miss out on, get in touch with Gill now! : gill.lowy@virgin.net.  Let her know why you want to be involved and how you think you can help and who knows, by the time the good weather returns, your very own range of fabulous Fairtrade flip-flops could well be the summer footwear staple to be seen in!
