Mulesing

An interesting article in The Guardian about mulesing – the process involves cutting off the skin around the buttocks of merino lambs, often without anaesthetic, to prevent “flystrike”, the infestation of blowfly maggots, which thrive in the folds of the sheep and eat into its flesh.

there’s a deal of miss-information about mulesing. farmers certainly don’t do it for fun…and despite the pain involved it is less awful than dying a slow death being eaten alive by maggots
good news is that Milkymerino [TM] are selectively breeding bare-breech merino sheep. this means they don’t need to mules.
